Energy plays a fundamental role in the industrial, technological, and socio- economic development of modern societies. It is essential for powering industries, transportation systems, communication technologies, and daily human activities. However, the increasing demand for energy and its intensive production, transformation, and consumption have raised serious concerns regarding the depletion of natural resources and environmental degradation. These issues are closely linked to pollution, which significantly impacts ecosystems and poses major risks to human health, including respiratory, cardiovascular, and other chronic diseases. This course handout is specifically designed for second-year Licence students in Electronics, Automation, Telecommunications, and Biomedical Engineering. It aims to provide a solid and comprehensive understanding of energy resources, including both renewable and non-renewable sources, as well as modern energy storage technologies. In addition, it highlights environmental challenges associated with energy use and examines the direct and indirect effects of pollution on human health and ecosystems. According to the curriculum framework of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, this handout is organized into six chapters: Chapter 1: Different energy sources Chapter 2: Energy storage Chapter 3: Consumption, reserves and development of energy resources Chapter 4: The different types of pollution Chapter 5: Detection and treatment of pollutants and waste Chapter 6: Impact of pollution on health and the environment In Chapter 1, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, biomass, and ocean energy are presented as sustainable solutions with lower environmental impacts. Non-renewable sources, including fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear energy, are also discussed, highlighting their limitations and environmental consequences. Chapter 2 is devoted to energy storage, which involves capturing energy produced at one time for later use. Technologies such as batteries, pumped hydro storage and thermal storage systems are introduced, emphasizing their role in balancing supply and demand and improving energy system reliability. In Chapter 3, the focus is on global energy consumption, which continues to increase due to population growth and economic development. The chapter also examines the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and highlights advancements in renewable energy technologies and efficiency improvements essential for sustainable development. Chapter 4 presents the different types of pollution, including air, water, and soil pollution. It explains their sources—such as industrial activities, agriculture, and urbanization—and their impacts on both the environment and human health. Chapter 5 addresses the detection and treatment of pollutants and waste. It explores modern techniques and technologies used to monitor, control, and reduce pollution, contributing to environmental protection and improved public health. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses the impacts of pollution on human health and the environment. It highlights how pollution contributes to diseases such as respiratory and cardiovascular disorders and examines its harmful effects on ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources. Through a structured and progressive approach, this document explores fundamental concepts of energy, its various forms, and the technologies used for its conversion and storage. It also addresses global challenges such as energy consumption, resource depletion, and environmental pollution. To support learning, the handout includes quizzes, exercises, and review questions designed to enhance understanding, critical thinking, and practical application of knowledge.
