Chemistry 1 From Atomic Structure to Chemical Bonding
This book is written for first-year students in the common core program of Materials Science (SM) and Science and Technology (ST). It also helps first-year students in engineering, biology, and medical sciences. It follows the national program for the first semester, known as Chemistry 1. Chemistry 2 comes later, in the second semester. The book has four chapters. The first covers the structure of the atom and how atomic theory developed over time. The second presents the models that describe how electrons are arranged in atoms. The third explains the periodic table: how it was built and what it is used for. The fourth deals with chemical bonding: how and why bonds form between atoms. Each chapter ends with exercises and detailed solutions. Many chemistry books focus mainly on exercises and solutions. This is useful, but not enough. As students, our real goal should be to learn for the long term, not only to pass exams. To really understand a topic, we need to read carefully, follow thereasoning behind each idea, look at experiments, and describe and explain what we observe and what we think. This was the main goal of this book: to use simple English, clear explanations, appropriate illustrations, and real examples. The self-tests help build critical reading skills. In addition, I tried to avoid too much extra information, so that the learner can read and practice without getting lost. At the end of the book, you will find a list of excellent references for those who want to learn more. Finally, I know this book is not perfect. I would be very happy to receive your comments and suggestions, so I can improve it. a.addoun@univ-alger.dz azeddine.addoun@gmail.com
